History

Aransas County, nestled along the Texas Gulf Coast, has a history as rich and diverse as its natural beauty. Long before European settlers arrived, the area was home to Native American tribes, including the Karankawa people. These early inhabitants thrived in the region, living off the abundant resources of the bays and estuaries. The Spanish were the first Europeans to explore the area in the 16th century, with Alonso Álvarez de Pineda mapping the coastline in 1519. Over time, the region became a hub for settlers, including Irish and Mexican immigrants, who established communities and brought their unique cultures to the area. During the Civil War, Aransas County was the site of several battles between Union and Confederate forces, which destroyed many of the coastal towns and left them abandoned. After the war, Aransas County quickly recovered and new towns were founded. In 1871, Aransas County was officially established, and Rockport became its county seat. The county grew as a center for fishing, shipbuilding, and tourism, drawing people to its picturesque shores and vibrant wildlife. Today, Aransas County is a blend of history and modernity. It has weathered challenges like Hurricane Harvey in 2017 but remains a resilient and welcoming community.
